Lady Gaga is the Second Coming

Germanotta, before she transformed into the Gaga
Well, that is what this LA Times’ article seems to reflect. Ann Powers, the writer of this particular article, compares Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, a.ka. Lady Gaga, as to many different iconic artiest as she can (Madonna, Elton John, Andy Warhol) and all I really have to say is “Really?”
The article gives some interesting points about Germanotta, but Powers makes some very strong assumptions about Germanotta. She makes Germanotta sound like she is the second coming of Christ because she is an artiest and a feminist. The reality is that every women that strives for their own career (teacher, lawyer, writer, etc.) are feminist because they are trying to create their own opportunities. Just because Germanotta dresses in “crazy” clothing and her “songs address serious themes like women’s shame about their bodies and the need for open communication in relationships” (Powers 2) do not make her any more special than any other career driven women.
Powers, and others, are placing Germanotta on such a high pedestal and it’s sickening. Powers needs calm the fangirl inside herself, because this article is over the top. I’m surprised that Powers didn’t express that Germanotta is going to fix the economy and global warming as well. Germanotta isn’t the next Madonna, Michael Jackson, or Simone de Beauvoir. What Lady Gaga is, is the “it” thing today and tomorrow there will be someone else to take her place.
