Thoughts on “The Brothers Bloom”

Brick has to be one of my favorite films of the past ten years, and I was interested to see what director Rian Johnson’s next film, The Brothers Bloom, had in store. Here is a brief synopsis of The Brothers Bloom from IMDB:

The Brothers Bloom are the best con men in the world, swindling millionaires with complex scenarios of lust and intrigue. Now they’ve decided to take on one last job - showing a beautiful and eccentric heiress the time of her life with a romantic adventure that takes them around the world.”

The Brothers Bloom is such a great film, and there are couple of Brick characters make cameos in the beginning of the film, which was pretty awesome, but the best thing about this film are the characters. Johnson creates such in depth characters that are memorable and the audience becomes connected with the characters once the film begins. The actors do such a great job creating lovable and funny characters throughout the whole film. I still cannot believe that there are so many well known actors/actress in this indie film.

Another thing that is splendid about this film is the cinematography. There are so many great shots in this film, and since the movie was shot on location Johnson uses wide-lens-shots to capture the landscape and the action. One of the best parts of the film is that Johnson uses steady cam throughout the action scenes, which lets the audience actually see what is going on. Many films, no a days, have very shaky cam and, frankly, I am getting a little tired of it.

This film is well written, acted, and shot. The Brothers Bloom pens, to a wider audience, this coming Friday, so check your local listing, because this is one film that you must catch.

P.S. You can watch the first seven minutes of the film here.
